Ghostsurfers.com was an active search engine from 1998-2002 that featured search by category based on the recommended search results of its almost 30,000 ghostsurfers. Ghostsurfers were paid half of the advertising revenues of the web site for their research.

From 2011-2013, an attempt was made to bring the Ghost Machine back to life. A new strategy emphasized ghost hunting at that time, while the original phantom webshopping was also retained in the hope of rebuilding the search engine. However, the attempted revival did not take place for lack of funding.
